June 21, Day 0 – The First Day of Summer!

It’s that time of year again! I’ve quit my job, packed all of my belongings into my girlfriend’s spare closet, and flown halfway across the country to live in the woods for 4+ months. I flew from Dallas, Texas to Kalispell, Montana this morning to start the Continental Divide Trail. This trail will be more rugged and remote than the Pacific Crest Trail so I’ve asked a great friend and hiking partner to join me, Approach! Approach and her parents picked me up from the Kalispell airport and we spent the afternoon in downtown Kalispell eating at a food truck, trying some local beer and buying our first round of trail food for the 6 day stretch through Glacier National Park. We called it a resupply at the time but it can’t be a “re”-supply if it’s the first one, so I guess it’s just a supply. That evening was spent telling stories around a fire and eating more food. We had a lot to catch up on and it was great to see Pam and David again too! I hadn’t seen the 3 of them since October! While they slept in their converted van, Approach and I opted for the ground outside. It’s where we feel most at home. I’m happy to be laying in my quilt writing again. I’ll try to update frequently but the CDT will really put me to the test. It’s generally considered the hardest of the “Big 3” (AT, PCT and CDT).

Our campsite for the night. We wanted to test our new tarps and weren’t 100% sure if it was going to rain or not.
Sunset is at around 10pm right now.

Hey, Jim! It’s been raining a lot in my part of the Rockies, so make sure that tarp stays in good shape! If you end up needing anything that I can help you with, just let me know. I don’t mind driving a few hours through the mountains if I need to. Love you, and be safe!
