July 22, Day 92 – 40 miles to freedom

I was up and out of camp by 6 so that I didn’t get in the way of anyone coming down the trail. Less than an hour into the day and I caught up to Wiesel Dick. We would hike most of the day together. It was super flat today and I really enjoyed being able to walk a fast pace without many breaks. Most of our water sources today were springs coming right out of the ground. They were delicious. We also got to swim in a beautiful lake with a log in the middle that let me sit in the water. It was probably my favorite swim yet. After swimming, I picked up the pace in hopes of doing my biggest mileage day yet. I really enjoy going all the way to the road on the day before town so I can start hitching immediately when I wake up. Doing so meant I had to hike 42.2 miles today and I did it. It wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be. The trail being really flat helped a lot with that. I got to the road around 10:30 and stayed up waiting for Wiesel Dick. He showed up around 11:30 and we stayed up for another hour while he drank a beer and we laughed about how ridiculous it was that we just hiked over 40 miles. We are looking forward to the town of Etna tomorrow. The bakery is supposed to be top notch.

Miles: 42.2 Total Miles: 1560.3
