July 7, Day 77 – Forest fires are becoming a reality

I camped alone last night so I kind of slept in. I woke up several times between 5 and 7, catching glimpses of a beautiful sunrise. I didn’t get out of bed until 7 though. It was the first time in 5 nights that I had slept more than 7 hours. My body needed it and I felt much better this morning. I hiked alone the entire day and it was kind of nice. My breaks were quiet and peaceful. I even took a brief nap at one. The landscape was stunning today. I got to walk along a few ridges with views of distant lakes. I also was able to keep an eye on the Sky Fire, which is about 20 miles east of us. I’m not worried about it reaching the trail but it is horrible to see the beginning of what is set to be a bad fire season. It reminded me that I need to do more miles each day if I want to get through California and Oregon before any big ones start. This, along with the fact that I was behind everyone, encouraged me to do 32 miles today, my biggest day yet. My feet felt great and legs felt strong. I think I’ll do another 30 mile day tomorrow.

Miles: 31.6 Total Miles: 1234.0

A view of the Sky Fire. It seems to be getting bigger each day.
