We had Red Kettlefor breakfast again then got more food for resupply then went back to our room to pack up and get organized. I still somehow left my water bladder in the bathroom. I should only need 4 liters of water capacity in this next stretch so I’ll just have to buy a new one in Big Bear. We had tacos for lunch to celebrate cinco de mayo. This was the best food decision I had made yet. The 3 veggie tacos I got there made me feel like I could climb a mountain. So I did. We had to hike 2.5 miles and 1700’ in elevation up devils slide and we did it in under an hour with 5 days of food and 3 liters of water. Maybe it was the rest in town that gave me fresh legs but I choose to believe it was the tacos. We camped in another beautiful spot .3 miles before the junction to Mt. San Jacinto. We had to be up early the next day so we could summit for sunrise then do another 20 miles after.
I tried to get caught up on the blog while in town but I didn’t feel the inspiration. Laying in a hotel bed isn’t the same as being 30 miles from the nearest road with just the bare necessities. It’s only taken 2 weeks and I already feel more comfortable in the woods than in town. I had a hard time just sitting in a chair for a whole meal. The itch to get back into the woods is strong. I’m looking forward to this next stretch. It will prove to be the most physically and mentally challenging section yet.
