Day 6 – Trail magic, by hikers, for hikers

Today was a special day for a lot of reasons. It was a “Zero Day” so we planned to do 0 miles. I woke up in a bed for the first time in a week. However, I think my body prefers sleeping outside already. It was the worst night of sleep I’ve had yet. It’s 6am and I’m already thinking about being back on trail. There were a few things we needed to do first. Waffles, then resupply, then the deli for lunch. I squeezed a nap in there too. Around 2pm we decided to head back out to trail and hitched a ride with the same guy who brought us in. What a legend. Once back at trail, we met up with Killian, Krijn, Pacemaker and Sophie. While some of us were setting up our sleeping spaces under the highway overpass, Din and Frish were hard at work preparing a special meal. They brought a kilogram (2.2 pounds) of flour and extra water so we could make pieces of bread similar to pita. We had Nutella to go on top. It was by far the best night I have had so far. With a belly full of Nutella and various other hiker snacks that were passed around that night, I fell asleep faster than my grandpa in his recliner.

It’s hard to describe some of the experiences on trail. As I lay in the dirt under a tree on day 9, I reflect back on this night. I will think about it when I touch the monument at Canada. The generosity and compassion hikers share with each other out here is hard to find sometimes back in civilization. 3 of the people around the fire tonight I had never met before in my life, and the rest I had known for only a few days. Yet it still felt like an old group of friends. I’m starting to feel the sense of family.
